Abstract

Ajanta is world famous as a Buddhist art center. These caves are famous for their lively paintings. The subjects of these cave paintings are the stories of the birth and rebirth of Mahatma Buddha, which is famous by the name of Jataka Katha. Due to its location in a village called Ajistha, it got the name Ajanta. At present this cave is located in the crescent shape in the picturesque valley of Baghora river in Aurangabad district (Maharashtra). Seeing the serene and captivating atmosphere here, the Buddhist monks must have considered it suitable for Kala Sadhana. Here we see a unique confluence of painting, sculpture and architecture. The paintings here have always attracted Indian artists and spectators. From time to time many artists also made imitations of the paintings here. Due to its unique paintings, architecture and sculpture, it was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1983.
